Even the most common sense appointment sometimes doesn’t work out. Coming off the back of his time with Leeds United, Monk was seen as one of the best managers at this level. And so it seemed like he would easily get Middlesbrough promoted back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
It didn’t work out that way though. While Middlesbrough didn’t do as badly as the other two teams that got relegated last season, seriously what happened to Sunderland and Hull City, they still didn’t do as well as they expected them being just outside of the promotion scene. In what I believe was an unfair move, Monk was let go after a win against Sheffield Wednesday and replaced by Tony Pulis just before Christmas. So a forgettable reign for him.
