Sunderland offer shelter for homeless as Beast from the East bites hard

The country is caught in the grip of a particularly nasty cold snap that the media has termed ‘The Beast from the East’ as Siberian weather patterns bring snow and chaos to the UK. Everywhere and everyone seems affected.

Schools have closed, businesses are affected and the condition on the roads has seen accident after accident, pile up after pile up and delay following delay. It isn’t over yet as fallen snow is subjected to falling temperatures as the Siberian beast bites deeper.

However, amongst this ever-expanding jigsaw of coldness comes a hint of warmth courtesy of struggling Championship side Sunderland as indicated in the following tweet.

The linked article on Sunderland’s club website states the following:

Sunderland AFC is opening its doors to the homeless and vulnerable this weekend, providing a safe and warm environment in the bitter conditions forecast. Stadium of Light staff have created a special warm-room complete with places to sleep, hot food and hot drinks for those in need of shelter. Pets are also welcome, and the room will be manned. The room is open now and will remain open until at least 9am on Monday morning, weather dependent. Anyone wishing to use the facility should arrive at Exit 2 in the South West Corner of the Stadium.”

Sunderland find themselves rooted to the foot of the Championship table, five points from safety on 27 points and in the depths of a very real relegation battle. However, they find themselves at the top end of the table for a gesture such as this one.
