5 League 2 players who could step up to League 1

Wide Midfielder

Nicky Adams (Bury)

2786441176When Nicky Adams penned a three-year deal with Bury a day after Rotherham United had booked their place at Wembley after a 3-1 victory over Preston North End, I wasn’t the only Millers’ fan double checking what I was reading. Adam’s had signed a two-and-a-half year contract at the New York Stadium less than five months earlier after impressing at Crawley Town and had scored an important goal (the equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Walsall). Adams made his name with Bury where he scored 12 goals in 77 appearances. His fine form at Gigg Lane saw him earn a move to Leicester City in 2008. After failing to break into the team over 2 years he joined Brentford where he again found first team opportunities were sparse. He rejuvenated his career at Rochdale but couldn’t save them from relegation to League 2 despite scoring 4 goals in 60 appearances for the club.

Adams has pace to burn and is a very skilful player. He’s on of those wingers that would have you on the edge of  your seat, he’s excellent to watch. Whenever he gets the ball his first though is whether he can make something happen or not, can he get into the box, can he take a man on. Sometimes his final ball leaves a lot to be desired, but more often than not he puts it into the right areas. The thing I liked about Nicky during his brief time at the NYS was he had no fear. If he made a mistake he would carry on doing what he was doing, he’s a confident player and has complete and utter belief in his ability. All these qualities are vital for the level above when coming up against accomplished full-backs.

David Flitcroft has made some excellent signings for this level and has a high calibre of talent at his disposal at Gigg Lane. Shwan Jalal, Daniel Nardiello and Ryan Lowe have all won promotion out of this league and, on paper at least Bury have the best squad in the division. I can see Nicky Adams being a League One player in the 2015-16 season and I can see him playing their with Bury.
