Hull City and Reading closely watching Portsmouth defender

Hull City and Reading are keeping a close eye on Portsmouth’s Matt Clarke according to a report from the Mirror.

The 21-year-old defender started his career at Ipswich Town but after being unable to break through into their first team, he headed to Portsmouth and he has been impressive for them ever since. Despite his young age, he has been a top player in their defence ever since he signed for them on loan in 2015 and the club were delighted to be able to make that deal permanent in January 2016.

But while Clarke is still a key player for Portsmouth, there is now a fear he might leave after teams from the Sky Bet Championship started to take a closer look as they plot a potential move. Both Hull and Reading are involved in a relegation battle at the moment, something they did not expect at the start of the season as both were tipped to be at the other end of the table. They are both very keen to improve their team as they hope to avoid the drop and believe an improvement to their defence would help them.

That is why both teams have been keeping a close eye on Clarke and could make a move for him before the end of the transfer window on Wednesday. Not only would he be a great addition and now and would improve either team’s defence but his age means he could make himself a mainstay in the back four for years to come.
