Lions snap up Derby County centre-back on Loan

Millwall have signed Derby County centre back Jason Shackell on loan until the end of the season, the club have confirmed.

The 34-year-old defender comes with a vast array of experience and will be available for his lions’ debut on Saturday in the FA Cup against Rochdale. However, he will be ineligible to play against his parent club at The Den on Tuesday night as part of the loan agreement. Shackell will provide competition for Jake Cooper and Shaun Hutchinson in defence.

Shackell started his career at Norwich City in 2003 making 119 appearances over 5 years. He joined Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2008 making 12 appearances whilst having loan spells at Norwich and Doncaster Rovers.

He moved to Barnsley in 2010, making 44 appearances before signing for Derby in 2011 where he made 46 appearances. He is perhaps best known for his spell at Burnley where he played 128 times for the clarets. Including under ex-Millwall defender Sean Dyche, captaining them to promotion to the Premier League in 2014. He left in 2015 to re-join Derby where he has so far made 54 appearances for the Rams.

Speaking to the club website, Shackell announced he cannot wait to play for his new club after signing earlier today.

“I’m really pleased to put pen-to-paper, really happy. After speaking to the manager, I’m really excited to get started at a great club.”

“I’ve overcome some injuries but I’m fighting fit.”

Millwall boss Neil Harris is as excited to have Shackell on board and is looking forward to working with his experience.

“I’m really pleased Jason Shackell has come in, we’ve been chasing an experienced centre half over the course of this transfer window.”

“You can never have enough experienced players in the team or in the squad to lead. I felt that in the back line we maybe needed another voice and some guidance”.
