Crewe Alexandra

Crewe manager left frustrated by injury time goal

With one win in four games and two of them seeing the concession of three goals, David Artell was within his rights to feel irked.  Saturday’s defeat leaves Crewe Alexandra in 20th place and just three points from safety.

Wycombe Wanderers, the visitors to the Alexandra Stadium, seemed to have flung away their opportunity of securing all three points.  In the 84th minute, Nathan Tyson close range effort found the back of the net.  However within four minutes, Harry McKirdy’s right footed shot seemed to have secured a draw for Crewe.

Wycombe had let it slip and Crew had given themselves a  share of the spoils.  Or so it seemed.  Then in the 92nd minute there was a further twist in the dramatic narrative of the game.

Craig Mackail-Smith poked a winner home, much to the delirium of the Wycombe travelling contingent.  With it, went any points on offer, and Artell was suitably miffed.

“We cannot continue to concede three goals at home and concede goals like we did. We can blame one man and he will deserve the criticism coming his way, but we made some stupid mistakes again.

“We cannot concede three goals at home and hope to win too many games of football. I thought we were good and the better side lost the game today but we have gifted them their third goal.

“Their second goal was an obvious handball. I think the whole stadium saw it but I am not surprised the referee has missed it because he isn’t very good. He sent me to the stand because he wasn’t very good and missed a decisive moment. I will go in and see him.”

Crewe have two tough away assignments in  their next two games.  Swindon Town at the County Ground next Saturday is then followed a week later by a trip to Meadow Lane and Notts County.

Crewe’s season may not hang in the balance based on those two games alone, but they will be solid tests of the resolve of Artell and his players.
