Former Real Madrid star, Royston Drenthe, has not been given a squad number for the upcoming season by Reading. Drenthe has already been training with the under 21’s squad and the Reading manager Nigel Adkins has publicly stated that Drenthe will have no place in his squad this season.

The pacy winger joined Reading only last season from Russian Premier League side Alaniya Vladikavkaz on a free transfer, but after only 23 appearances in which he scored just 2 goals, Adkins has deemed him surplus to requirements.

Drenthe’s attitude may have been the cause of his imminent departure as he posted on Instagram that he was not travelling with the first team to their training camp, and that he had been told to leave by Nigel Adkins. Adkins was quoted as saying,

It’s quite interesting that people have the opportunity to go and do things off their own bat on social media”

Reading have been seen by some people as being one of the favourites to be promoted this season, and for that to be achieved they need band together as a group, and the departure of Royston Drenthe will only add to this group mentality.
