Millwall vs Leeds Wallace scores late in SEVEN goal thriller

A 92nd minute winner from Jed Wallace saw Millwall beat Leeds United 4-3 in one of the most thrilling games of the Championship season so far.

It was the first time this season Neil Harris’ men left an away game with all three points and the first time they’ve beat Leeds at Elland Road since 2010. He made two changes to the starting 11 that drew 1-1 with Preston. Conor McLaughlin and Shaun Williams returned to the side with Shane Ferguson making the bench after a long-term injury.

Leeds boss Thomas Christiansen was adorned with suspensions and injuries; he was consigned to making numerous changes to their narrow 1-0 defeat to Ipswich last time out. Most notably giving defender Laurens De Bock his first start for his new club after joining Club Brugge this week.

Millwall thought they took the lead early on only for Jed Wallace’s long range effort to be disallowed for offside controversially. However, the visitors did take the lead on 18 minutes after ex-Leeds striker Steve Morison’s cross found Aiden O’Brien to head in from close range.

Then Leeds went down to 10 men after Liam Cooper was shown a straight red card after a tackle on George Saville, with the Millwall and Leeds assistant managers both being sent to the stands in a touchline row. The Lions made their man advantage count as three minutes before half time, they doubled their lead through Lee Gregory’s tap in after another cross from Morison. With Gregory injuring himself in the process, nothing serious.

Christiansen’s half-time team talk clearly had an impact as they found themselves reducing the deficit almost immediately through Pierre-Michel . Nine minutes later the hosts were level after Jordan Archer spilled the ball for Kemar Roofe to poke in after a goal line scramble. Then seven minutes later, Leeds turned it round completely to take the lead after Lassoga’s long range effort found the bottom left hand corner of the goal.

As it looked Millwall would have to wait for their first away win of the season, former Leeds striker Tom Elliott levelled it up again on 87 minutes after his chested volley. Millwall were still in search of a winner and duly got it after Jed Wallace’s solo effort won the match in the second minute of stoppage time to rescue all three points for the lions. It could have been all gone after Archer’s unbelievable save stopped an equaliser in the dying moments of the game.

Speaking to the media after the match, manager Neil Harris was unsure how to feel after the thrilling encounter between the two sides.

“I have contrasting emotions if I’m honest.”

“At half time and at 2-0, I said to the boys not to step off, if they come off at 6-0 is no disgrace. At a place like Elland Road.”

“Fair play to Leeds, that was some hell of a performance by them to get on top.”

From the opposition dugout, manager Thomas Christansen could not hide his disappointment after his side threw away the lead with 3 minutes to go.

“When you lose at the end like we did today, I can only say that we’re disappointed. This was a bad way to lose, after the reaction in the second half which was very positive.”
