Premier League midfielder sees move to Scunthorpe United fall through

Burnley midfielder Aiden O’Neill’s proposed loan move to Scunthorpe United has fallen through, according to the Lancashire Telegraph.

The youngster was set to join the League One side but the Iron have decided to look at other targets. O’Neill has been away with Australia at the at the AFC U23 Championships and is keen to secure a loan move away from Turf Moor for the rest of the season.

The 19 year-old spent the first half of this season on loan at League One side Fleetwood Town. He made 27 appearances in all competitions for the Cod Army.

He spent last season on loan at Oldham Athletic so has already gained some first-team experience in his early career. He has played nearly 50 games in the third division and is still only a teenager.

He was born in Brisbane in Australia and represents his country at U23 and hopes to one day play for their senior side. He played for Brisbane Athletic but moved to England to pursue a career in the English leagues. He was signed by Burnley in 2014.

He signed his first professional contract for the Clarets in January 2016 and made his debut for the club on 20th August 2016 when he came on as a late substitute against Liverpool. He has since played two more times for them but has gained a lot of game time on loan at Oldham and Fleetwood.

A move to Scunthorpe will not happen for O’Neill but there will no doubt be other League One clubs after him in this window.
