Ipswich boost defensive options with French import

Sky Bet Championship side Ipswich Town have signed French defender Chris Goteni, according to the East Anglian Daily Times.

The 19-year-old is currently playing for Saint-Apollinaire in the French fifth division, but Mick McCarthy has signed the teenager on a deal until the end of the season after he impressed in a trial at Town’s Playford Road training centre.

Goteni was at ASPTT Dijon until the summer of last term, however Mick McCarthy confirmed that the inexperienced teenager had signed a deal, which includes an option for an extension, for the Suffolk side following the Blues’ 1-0 win over Leeds United.

“He’s joined us until the end of the season with an option. He came and trained with the first team and did alright.

“He played in a practice match the other day and was awful, but I’d seen enough in the training.”

The Blues are currently undergoing an injury crisis which has had a major affect on the Tractor Boys’ defensive department. Ipswich were without Adam Webster and Tommy Smith for the game against Leeds United today, with both struggling with an Achilles issue and illness respectively, therefore meaning that Chris Smith was recalled from his loan at Vanarama National League South side Chelmsford City.

And it looks like the Blues will need to venture further into defensive additions as rumours linked Smith to a potential move to MLS side Colorade Rapids, however Blues boss McCarthy insisted he has had no contact with the American side despite Smith’s recent return.
