PREVIEW: Cambridge vs Crewe – Railwaymen look to escape relegation nightmare

Dave Artell’s Crewe Alexandra travel to Cambridge this weekend attempting to pull away from the bottom two.

Cambridge United currently sit in 14th place having accumulated 33 points so far this season. The U’s are well and truly in the play-off chasing back. Only four points behind 7th placed Coventry.

Crewe will be looking shoulder sat in 20th. Despite their six point cushion over the bottom two, the Alex could easily find themselves slipping into danger by the turn of the new year.

Cambridge were able to brush aside another side near the bottom on Boxing Day, defeating Barnet by a goal to nil. Former Barnsley man George Maris’ striker was enough for the U’s to come away with the points.

Midfielder Gary Deegan could retain his place in the starting 11 having performed well in the Boxing Day win over Barnet. David Amoo may also be available for Shaun Derry as may forward Jabo Ibhere. Winger Harrison Dunk looks set to miss the weekend’s clash but should be back at the beginning of January.

Crewe claimed three vital points of their own on Boxing Day with an impressive win over a much improved Chesterfield away from home.

Chris Porter and Charlie Kirk scored the decisive goals as the Alex were able to climb away from the relegation zone.

The trip to Cambridge has come too early for George Ray, James Jones and Ryan Wintle who are all back in training but the trio won’t be back until 2018.

The pair met back in September with Derry’s men able to collect all the points.

Former Carlisle United striker Jabo Ibhere scored the only goal of the game before the interval.
