5 League 1 players who could step up to the Championship

Striker

Britt Assombalonga (Peterborough United)

Assombalonga struggled to break through at Watford during his two years at the club, failing to dislodge Troy Deeney and Matej Vydra out of the team. During loan spells at non-league outfits Wealdstone and Braintree, Assombalonga was in lethal form netting a combined 11 goals in 16 appearances for the two clubs. It was at Southend United where he really burst onto the scene scoring 15 goals in 43 games for Paul Sturrock’s League 2 outfit. His form at Southend prompted Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson to break the club’s transfer-record to acquire his services on a four-year basis. Assombalonga was in lethal form for Peterborough firing them to a play-off spot and triumph in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final, a game in which he scored in.

Assombalonga is quite simply, a goal machine, scoring a wide variety of different goals from tap ins to screamers. His ability to score different type of goals makes him a key asset. He’s one of the most powerful strikers in the lower leagues. He has pace, strength and has an eye for goal to, key qualities needed to make the grade as a top Championship striker. Assombalonga is a lethal weapon in League One and at the age of 21, he still has time to improve and one day it will be at Championship level. Assombalonga’s relentless work rate edges him ahead of other strikers on the pecking order, you’ll never find him standing still with his constant harrying of defenders to try and force a mistake or make something out of a lost cause.

The asking price that Peterborough will have put on Assombalonga is likely to deter many clubs from putting in a bid for him. For Assombalonga the only route to the Championship at this present moment would be taking Peterborough there. I’m sure that Assombalonga will be determined to fire Peterborough back to the Championship after his club underachieved in the league last season.
