5 League 1 players who could step up to the Championship

Goalkeeper

Tommy Lee (Chesterfield)

Tommy Lee has been a regular between the sticks at Chesterfield since signing from Macclesfield Town in 2008. Lee is loved by Chesterfield supporters which is made obvious considering he won the fan-voted Player of the Year Award in successive seasons. Lee has earned himself a reputation of being one of the best goalkeepers outside of the Championship and his performances have been noticed on countless occasions. He was an ever-present in Chesterfield’s 2010-11 League Two title-winning campaign and found himself in the PFA Team of the Year, a feat he repeated again last season as he once more helped Chesterfield win the League 2 title.

Lee has all the attributes to make it as a keeper in the Championship and as a first team regular at that. He is a tall and commanding keeper who dominates his area and more often that not collects balls from set piece situations and crosses. Not only is he excellent at commanding his area but he is also a tremendous shot -stopper, one of the best I’ve seen outside of the Championship for that matter.

The former Manchester United goalkeeper is crucial to Chesterfield and they are much worse off when he is not in the side. His absence cost Chesterfield in the 2011-12 season when a lengthy injury kept him out of the side for a sustained period, in that time Chesterfield tumbled down the League One table and were eventually relegated. The loyalty he has shown to Chesterfield in recent seasons indicates that pursuing Championship footballer at another club is unlikely for Lee but I’m sure he will be looking towards the play-off places this season and eyeing the possibility of playing there with Chesterfield.

Don’t just take my word for it, you can see a video of some of Tommy Lee’s best saves from the 2013-14 season here. Is he good enough for the Championship? Let me know in the comments section.
