Norwich City attacker makes return from injury in under-23s win

Norwich City attacker Steven Naismith made his first competitive appearance in almost four months with a 60-minute outing for the club’s under-23s side against Middlesbrough in a Premier League 2 fixture on Sunday afternoon.

The Canaries shocked a Boro side who have done well at under-23 level this term with a 1-0 win at a bitterly cold Colney Training Centre. Former Club Brugge striker Pierre Fonkeu grabbed the only goal of the match early in the first half with a clinical finish.

Scotland international attacking midfielder Naismith had not made an appearance since playing in Norwich City’s 4-1 EFL Cup victory over Charlton Athletic at Carrow Road in late August but the player started for the under-23s against Boro.

Naismith came through the contest unscathed and forced a good save from visiting keeper Aynsley Pears in the second half. The former Rangers and Everton attacker played the first 60 minutes of the match before being replaced by Kieran Higgs.

Norwich City signed Naismith from The Toffees in January 2016 and the Scot has gone on to make 48 appearances for The Canaries in which he has scored eight goals. The player made 32 appearances for his club last season and Naismith will provide head coach Daniel Farke with a real boost upon his return to the first team squad.
