Chelsea midfielder set for Exeter City return in Checkatrade Trophy

Chelsea’s summer signing Ethan Ampadu could face former club Exeter City when The Blues take on The Grecians in the Checkatrade Trophy at St James’ Park this evening.

The 17-year-old Exeter born midfield anchorman joined the reigning English Premier League champions on 1 July with a transfer fee yet to be determined by a tribunal.

The player made his first team debut for The Blues in Chelsea’s 5-1 EFL Cup victory over Sky Bet Championship club Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge in September and Ampadu has gone on to make a further senior appearance in the following round against Everton.

Ampadu has made a handful of appearances for the Chelsea Development Squad and with The Blues’ first team injury list having receded in recent weeks, the youngster could be fielded in Joe Edwards’ under-23s side against former club Exeter City this evening.

The midfielder played in his club’s first fixture in the Checkatrade Trophy this season when The Blues drew 2-2 at Plymouth Argyle before losing the match 5-4 on penalty kicks and Ampadu would have featured against Yeovil Town last time out if not for Chelsea’s first team injury crisis and the fact that he was required to be used in squad rotation for a first team EFL Cup tie.

Should he play at St James’ Park, Ampadu is expected to receive a warm reception from the home fans.
