West Bromwich Albion plotting move for on-loan Aston Villa goalkeeper

Premier League side West Bromwich Albion are keen on a move for Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone in January, according to The Sun.

Johnstone is currently on loan at Championship side Aston Villa from Manchester United and is apparently valued at around £5 million.

He has a recall clause in his loan deal which means if West Brom do lodge a bid for him in January then his loan could be cut short. Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce is keen on signing Johnstone on a permanent basis but now faces competition from the Premier League.

Johnstone, 24, came up through the Manchester United academy but has never nailed down a first-team spot at Old Trafford. He had various loan spells out with Oldham Athletic, Scunthorpe United, Yeovil Town, Walsall, Doncaster Rovers and Preston North End before joining Villa on loan last January. Steve Bruce then signed him again for another season in the summer.

Johnstone has been impressive for Villa so far this season. They struggled during the early part of the campaign but have now turned it around and are currently in the Play-Off places. Villa fans will be hoping that they can hold onto Johnstone until the end of the season or even try and sign him on a permanent deal.

Johnstone’s contract expires at Manchester United in the summer so they will not want him to leave the club on a free transfer. Therefore, Aston Villa and West Brom look set to battle it out for the shot stopper in January.
