Former Newcastle United winger Nolberto Solano is the shock early favourite to land the managerial vacancy at Sky Bet League One club Gillingham according to English Football League sponsors Sky Bet.
The 42-year-old is currently coaching in his native Peru but is thought to be keen on a return to English football after enjoying well over a decade representing a number of clubs including Newcastle United, Aston Villa, West Ham United and Leicester City.
According to the latest odds from English Football League sponsors Sky Bet, Solano is the hot favourite for the managerial vacancy at Kent club Gillingham. The Gills are currently searching for a new manager after former boss Ady Pennock left the club on Monday following a poor start to the season.
Pennock won just 18.75% of his matches in charge of Gillingham and leaves the club sitting in 22nd position in the Sky Bet League One table.
Potential managerial candidate Solano’s only previous coaching experience in England came in 2012 when he worked with non-league club Newcastle Benfield. The Peruvian has played in the third tier of English football during a short spell with Hartlepool United in the 2011/2012 campaign. Solano’s stint at Victoria Park proved to be his last season before hanging up his boots.
