West Yorkshire Round-Up: Bradford City enjoy success and Leeds United rest

The Bantams’ hero of the weekend was unsurprisingly Charlie Wyke who popped up a hat-trick, to kickstart his goal tally for the 2016/17 season against the Gas.

Bradford City went into the game under some intense pressure from Bantams boss Stuart McCall following the Walsall game in which City threw away a three-goal lead to come away from their League One counterparts with only a draw.

The Bantams kicked off the game in style as Charlie Wyke managed to hit home Romain Vincelot’s flick-on from a Bradford corner in the 13th minute of the game which set the pace for an exciting game in front of the television cameras.

Summer singing Dominic Poleon was exceptional for the Bantams, causing problems with his darting runs and sheer pace which seemed to intense panic in the Bristol Rovers defence.

Wyke hit home his second goal in the second-half after a Tony McMahon corner found its way to the strikers head as he broke free from his marker to give the Bantams a two-goal lead. McMahon was exceptional for the Bantams and created a number of problems from right-back with City managing to earn a number of corners which in turn created two goals for the Bantams.

Jake Reeves was another shining light in this game as he has been since signing for the Bantams and a beautifully hit left-footed cross managed to find its way to Wyke who made no mistake, heading into the top-corner to claim his first hat-trick for Bradford City.

Bristol Rovers’ in-form man Billy Bodin managed to pull one back for the visitors after Tom Nicholls’ excellent curling effort rebounded off the post – but the Bantams were to make no mistake after blowing a three-goal lead the week before and claimed all three points here.

Bradford City’s two players away on international duty with Northern Ireland, Shay McCartan and Adam Thompson both failed to make an appearance in both of Northern Ireland’s qualifying matches for the World Cup, but nonetheless, Northern Ireland managed to win both games to give both City players a chance of making the World Cup in 2018.
