Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper set for the exit door

West London Sport understands that Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper Matt Ingram is to sign for Sky Bet League One side Northampton Town. The Sky Bet League One club are set to bolster their squad with the former Wycombe Wanderers keeper for the remainder of the season on loan.

Ingram has played second fiddle to firm number one Alex Smithies at Loftus Road ever since he joined the club  back in January 2016, signed by then-manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. He appeared in both Carabao Cup matches earlier this season for QPR, which included a 1-0 victory against Northampton. The sacking of Justin Edinburgh may not necessarily damage the prospects of this deal going through.

It would appear that 23-year-old Ingram could be recalled at any point from this deal, should Smithies pick up a problem. Joe Lumley is set to therefore be promoted to second choice keeper for now, but even if he picked up an injury or suspension, EFL rules state that Holloway could recall Ingram. This places some doubt over the deal, although Holloway may only use it as a last resort.

QPR therefore will have just two senior goalkeepers remaining on the books, unless they dip into the loan market themselves or find a free agent to cover them for the remainder of the season. Still, it is viewed as a positive move for Ingram, who at this stage of his career does need regular minutes to aid his development. He proved during his time at Wycombe, where he made over 130 appearances, that he is a more than able and capable player to call upon, and Northampton will be looking for him to hit the ground running at Sixfields.
