3 strikers Sunderland could sign to boost their title challenge

New Sunderland manager Simon Grayson will be aiming to guide the club to an immediate Premier League return. However, this may become a tough challenge due to their lack of attacking options.

The transfer window is coming to a close and Sunderland only have 3 senior strikers at the club – Duncan Watmore, Lewis Grabban and James Vaughan. During this campaign, the Black Cats will be playing a minimum of 50 games, so it may be difficult for three strikers to keep a good level of fitness all season. Therefore, it can be argued that Sunderland may need to look at bringing a striker in before the transfer deadline next week.

In this article we will be identifying 3 potential attacking targets that Grayson could look at bringing to the Stadium of Light.

Chuba Akpom

Young Arsenal forward Chuba Akpom spent the first half of last season on loan with Hull City in the Premier League, but went on to join Brighton & Hove Albion in the January transfer window.

The 21-year-old has a very impressive record for Arsenal’s Under 23s side – netting 31 goals in just 44 appearances. Furthermore, Akpom is not short of Championship experience; he has featured in 52 games in the second tier of English football so far in his short career.

Arsenal have the England Under 21 international registered as a first-team player.

A move to the Stadium of Light would be realistic for Sunderland as Akpom searches for vital experience. A top Championship side like Sunderland would be a good move for Akpom as it is unlikely that any Premier League clubs would show an interest.

Chuba Akpom has already been linked with an Arsenal exit, with Celtic and Leeds United reportedly chasing his signature.

Callum Robinson

Preston North End’s Callum Robinson could be a more permanent option for the Black Cats. His pace and creativity will only benefit Simon Grayson’s squad and would be a good addition if the manager is looking to bolster his attacking force.

Having a creative player like Robinson alongside Lewis Grabban or James Vaughan would be effective due to their superior finishing.

The 22-year-old has featured for 4 different England teams – the Under 16s, 17s, 19s and 20s.

Robinson may cost a fairly heavy fee but money should not be too much of a stumbling block for a club of Sunderland’s status. A move to the Stadium of Light would be very appealing to the striker and would be a good step in his footballing career.

Since joining Preston from Aston Villa, Callum Robinson has scored 20 goals in 94 games, and has also registered 10 assists in the process. Robinson played for Grayson at Preston, making a move reasonably suitable.

Jordan Hugill

Having worked under Grayson at Deepdale, a move to Sunderland would be sensible for Jordan Hugill. The lethal talisman has netted 23 goals in 90 games during his time with Preston North End.

The 25-year-old has proved his worth in the Championship, and is not a stranger to finding the back of the net in the division.

Hugill has been linked with a move away from Deepdale since close season, with several clubs interested, including Leeds United, Derby County, Birmingham City and Huddersfield Town.

There were a few rumours linking Sunderland with Hugill, so, perhaps it would be a good idea for Sunderland to follow up this interest as he could well be the perfect fit.
