Assombalonga fires blanks as Forest go fourth

Nottingham Forest’s nightmares came to nothing on Saturday afternoon as former striker Britt Assombalonga failed to score for current employers Middlesbrough in a Sky Bet Championship clash between the two clubs at The City Ground.

Forest won the match 2-1 with goals from Barrie McKay and Assombalonga’s replacement Daryl Murphy while Ben Gibson’s goal late on was a mere consolation for the visitors.

The win sees Mark Warburton’s side occupy fourth position in the Sky Bet Championship table and the afternoon was made all the more sweeter for The Reds after seeing former talisman Assombalonga spurn some key chances to score for his new club.

Forest sold Assombalonga to Boro last month in a deal worth up to £15 million. The transfer was labelled by some as an astute move by Forest with the club cashing in on a player who made just 69 appearances in three years with the club due to injury problems.

The fear for Forest was undoubtedly seeing Assombalonga score on his return to The City Ground but with the  player having missed a number of chances, The Reds’ decision to sell the striker did not come back to haunt them on this occasion.

Assombalonga scored his first two goals for Boro on Tuesday evening when they beat Burton Albion 2-0 at The Riverside Stadium.
