Aston Villa focus attentions on snapping up midfielder from Arsenal

The Daily Mail understands that Sky Bet Championship side Aston Villa are keen on signing Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere. The 25-year-old is back at the Emirates Stadium after spending the season out on loan at AFC Bournemouth, but his future with the Gunners has been under some doubt.

His contract expires at the end of the current season and it remains to be seen if Arsene Wenger is willing to offering an extension. However, speaking to the Independent, Wenger has opened the door to Wilshere fighting for his place in the team, putting doubt on any move to Aston Villa or anywhere else for that matter.

West Ham United were also interested, as were overseas duo Sampdoria and Antalyaspor. Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe decided against pursuing a permanent deal for Wilshere, who made a total of 27 appearances for the Cherries.

The skilful playmaker made his return from injury in an Under-23 match on Monday against Derby County in a Premier League 2 match. This was the first time in nearly a year he appeared in an Arsenal shirt. He has been out of action altogether since sustained an injury whilst with the Cherries at the end of last season in April.

Villa’s disappointing start to the season continued with their second successive defeat last night away to Reading. Manager Steve Bruce is still hoping to add new faces to improve their chances of correcting their poor form, but perhaps Wilshere could be too much of a hurdle for them. Then again, he did manage to convince former Chelsea and England captain John Terry that Villa Park was the place to be.
