Middlesbrough agree deal for rated defender

Middlesbrough have agreed a deal to sign Birmingham City defender Ryan Shotton, according to the Northern Echo.

Garry Monk’s men are hoping to complete the deal for the former Derby County man in time for Saturday’s trip to Nottingham Forest.

Since arriving at the Riverside this summer, Monk has made a great deal of changes to the Boro squad, as they look to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking. Eight players have come in to the club, and it appears almost certain that Shotton will become the ninth.

Shotton has been targeted by Boro officials for a long time, with the Birmingham hierarchy finally agreeing to sell the 28-year-old. The fee is likely to be the £3 million that Harry Redknapp’s men were holding out for.

The defender came up through the ranks at Birmingham’s Midlands rivals Stoke City, undergoing a number of loan spells away from the Bet365 Stadium, including at Derby County, where he signed permanently in January 2015. A year later, he was loaned out to the Blues, signing a permanent three-year contract at St. Andrews in June of last year for an undisclosed fee.

Boro will be delighted to add Shotton to their squad, as they have been looking particularly light at the back since their campaign begun with a 1-0 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers. As Daniel Ayala was injured, young prospect Dael Fry was forced to partner Ben Gibson, who is continually being linked with a move away from Teeside, on Saturday evening, as Boro scraped three points at home to Sheffield United.

Meanwhile, Stewart Downing is expected to move in the opposite direction, although a deal still hasn’t been reached between the two clubs.
