Season Preview: The Championship

Wolverhampton Wanderers Wolves

The Odds – (Via-William Hill)

League Winners: 16/1

Promotion: 6/1

Relegation: 11/1

The Background

Wolves went up as League 1 Champions and broke the all time points haul with 103. That points tally saw 31 wins, 10 draws and only 5 losses. Star men Dicko, Griffiths and Sako all topped the club goalscoring charts weighing in with 12 each, and Wolves managed 89 goals in the season, almost averaging two goals per game. The club also held one of the meanest defensive records keeping 25 clean sheets and only conceding 29 goals across those other 21 games.

The Transfers

Tommy Rowe in, Rajiv van La Parra in and 10 players out. Not much business done for Wolves so far, however the transfers in are very welcome additions to an already strong squad. Rowe joins up from Peterborough where as Rajiv van La Parra joins from Heerenveen. Fans can look to Pat Bamford and Chris Wood as potential incomings up-front, both of whom would be more than adequate signings for the club.

The Star Men

Kevin McDonald has been a vital ingredient in Wolves’ team. The midfielder’s defensive commitments and attacking efficiency have been vital in Wolves’ clean sheet and goalscoring record. Although McDonald only scored 5 goals, his work rate was unquestionable and his desire to throw himself into tackles and challenges and pick out a pass truly showed all-round ability. His determination and composure on the ball to drive with it and create opportunites is what saw him rated as Wolves’ Player of the Season.

Nouha Dicko and Bakary Sako are two other players who can cause opposition nightmares on their day. The two pacey and skillful players create a frightening attack for Wolves and with them both scoring plenty of goals, the upcoming season looks bright and full of promise.

Defender Danny Batth is another vital part of the team. His solidarity and aerial presence standing at 6ft 2inches can cause nightmares for defenders from corners when attacking and tough times for strikers playing up against him. He chipped in with two goals last season and at only 23, he has plenty of time to become one of Wolves’ best ever defenders and solidify his status as a club legend in the future.

The Gaffer

Kenny Jackett broke the all time League points record and saw his side keep the best defensive record in the league. It’s fair to say his first season as the boss of Wolves went well. Jackett previously managed Millwall, Swansea and Watford and with his current record at Wolves being only seven losses in a 51 game period, he can only be positive towards the future. Jackett realistically knows that Wolves have the capabilities to finish mid-table. With the current momentum of the squad, it looks increasingly likely that they can achieve that and push on in further years.

Thoughts on last season?

Beating the all time points record in the division and breaking many club records along the way, last season can be seen as a very successful one by all Wolves fans. Bossing many games from start to finish it was good to see, however the poor quality in the league gave me some doubts at whether it was us playing well or the opposition playing badly. I recall one game, at home to the Gills, a routine 4-0 home win (we’ll forget the away fixture) and I left the ground unsatisfied despite such a large win. However despite this, getting an immediate bounce back is very pleasing and was a brilliant season nevertheless.
Hopes for this season?
This season may be another season of rebuilding at the club, and I’m sure many fans would be happy with a half way finish. I think our fate for the season will be largely down to Jackett’s business this summer, after already signing Tommy Rowe and Rajiv Van la Parra I believe it’s essential we sign a decent target man, Chris Wood is a target target man for Wolves and would be a great signing. However mid table would be enough for me, and with Jackett looking for some new coaches a stage of rebuilding is what I think we’re likely to see next season.
Fears for this season?
My fear for this season is that because the Wolves fans were so used to winning all season expectations will be far to high next year and the lack of quality may disappoint fans when taking that step back to the championship.
However on a personal basis my fear would be that we’re a bit light in the heart of defence, Danny Batth has not proved his quality to me just yet and when a suspension or injury creeps in our next centre half would be Ebanks-Llandel or Ricketts would be covering. Centre half therefore would be my worry, and potentially we’re lacking a good defensive midfielder.
Players to look out for?
Bakary Sako on his game can be up there with the beat players in the league, but it feels like Sako can die down a bit and be in the game for short spells. The one to watch might be this young lad we’ve just picked up from Heerenveen, at 23 previously picking up caps at Holland U’21 level I am looking forward to see what he can bring to the club and it’s always nice to see a fresh face.
Rate your manager out of 10?
10/10
If any of you watched Gillette Soccer Saturday you know Jeff Stelling would be agreeing with me on that King Kenny has done a fantastic job at the Molineux this year. Taking a club with such high expectation and nothing but promotion would be accepted he had such a big task, but by picking his sides on quality and not by their names has proven to be the key to Jackett’s success this season. He has already attracted clubs in a higher position than Wolves but has said he’s in it for the long haul, I believe Jacket is the right man to take us forward and can’t wait to see what next season has in store for us.
What away day are you looking forward to and why?
Leeds is always a big away day purely for the sheer size of the two clubs that will be going head to head that day but for me I’m looking forward to the big away day to Cardiff, us coming up them going down, a big ground and two teams that are that I believe will finish around the same place. The Cardiff game just edges the Leeds game for me due to it being a bit later on in the season when it matters more edging into crunch time (28th Feb).
What position will you finish?
12th, however I’d love to see a play off push late on.
