Middlesbrough look to have beaten of fierce competition for Nottingham Forest’s Britt Assombalonga with a bid of £14 million, according to The Sun.
The 24-year-old moved to the City Ground back in 2014 for a fee believed to be in the region of £5 million and has continued his impressive strike rate at the Championship club. Last term, Assombalonga bagged 14 goals in 32 league appearances to give him a ratio of nearly a goal every two games.
The former Peterborough United man has been involved in great deal of speculation regarding the striker’s future, with Middlesbrough, Burnley and ex-employers Watford all battling it out for Assombalonga’s signature. The Clarets reportedly saw an £8 million bid rejected last week, whilst the Hornets were rumoured to have placed a £10 million offer.
However, it is now reported that the striker looks set for a move to the Riverside after a huge £14 million bid from Garry Monk’s team. Burnley are not prepared to match Boro’s big-money offer, whilst Watford quickly withdrew interest after prices increased. Reports also state Assombalonga will be offered a colossal £60,000 per week contact with a move to Teesside.
The deal is set to be completed upon the striker’s return from Nottingham Forest’s Florida training camp.
Newly-relegated Boro will be looking for an instant return to the Premier League and manager Garry Monk has already completed a number of signings to strengthen the options at his disposal. With nearly 100 senior goals to his name already, Assombalonga promises to find the target in the Championship and would be a good asset for Middlesbrough.
