Brighton goalkeeper set to make move to League One

Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Christian Walton is set to sign for League One side Wigan Athletic on loan for the season, according to Sunday’s print edition of The Sun.

We reported earlier this month that Wigan had entered the race to sign the goalkeeper from Brighton, and it now looks as though he will be moving further north for the upcoming season.

Walton, 21, has not made the cut to be included in Brighton’s squad for their Premier League season.  However, the club still want him to get game time and so will allow him to join Wigan in a season-long loan deal.  Walton will have a good chance to get exactly that, with Matt Gilks leaving Wigan to join Scunthorpe United this month.

After spending most of his youth career with Plymouth Argyle, Walton signed for Brighton in 2013.  He has made four first-team appearances for the club so far, all coming in the 2014-15 season.  The goalkeeper has also been loaned out several times.

Last summer, Walton joined Luton Town on a season-long loan deal but was recalled by Brighton at the end of January.  During his time in League Two, he made 33 appearances and conceded the fewest number of goals in the league.  Walton then joined Southend United on an emergency loan deal in April and made seven League One appearances.

Newly-appointed Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook will be looking to make the right additions to his squad as he looks to take the club back to the Championship next season.
