Latics enter race for young Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper

Wigan Athletic have joined the race to sign young Brighton keeper Christian Walton, according to Bedfordshire News.

After a brief stay in the Championship last season, Wigan are now back in League One and will be trying to add new recruits to their squad to help them bounce straight back up at the first time of asking.

Young keeper Walton is yet to properly break into the first team at Brighton and following their promotion to the Premier League this prospect looks increasingly unlikely.

The youngster, who has represented England at U21 level, enjoyed a successful loan spell at League Two club Luton Town at the start of the season just gone. Luton fans took to the keeper during this short loan spell and will no doubt be happy that along with Wigan, they are one of the other clubs being linked with Walton so far this Summer.

The keeper also enjoyed a two month emergency loan spell at Essex-based club Southend United last season following a goalkeeping crisis at Roots Hall. Southend, however, aren’t a club that have been linked to a move for Walton this Summer.

While Luton fans will be hopeful, it appears that Wigan may now beat Hatters manager Nathan Jones to the signing of Walton.

New Wigan manager Paul Cook appears to want to try and add the young keeper to his squad. After conceding just 24 goals in 27 appearances, keeping eight clean sheets and a 78% saves to shot ratio at League Two level last season, it comes as no real surprise that a League One club is now keen on signing the towering keeper.
