Oldham Athletic Vs Notts County

Oldham Athletic 1-1 Notts County

Oldham Athletic and Notts county met in the final game of the Sky bet Football League 1 season at Boundary park in front of a crowd of over 7000 fans. With safety already assured for Oldham, it was Notts County who needed the points most to ensure they remained in League one next season, and with over 3000 travelling fans cheering them on, they did just that.

Safety didn’t come easily for the Magpies however, Oldham looked the better side from the start creating a few good chances testing Bialkowski in the County goal but he saved well. The second half was a much more open half though, with both Crewe and Tranmere winning at half time, County knew they needed a point to escape the drop zone. Although it was the home side who took the lead when a good cross from a free kick just outside the area fell kindly to the head of centre half Adam Lockwood who nodded home well.  From then on County pressed more for the equaliser and were denied on numerous occasions by the Latics keeper, before a good cross in to the box was blocked by the arm of Oldham defender Jonathan Grounds and County had a penalty. Alan Sheehan converted the penalty finely to level the game. As both sides pushed for a winner in this good attacking game, Oldham were reduced to ten men when Adam Lockwood received his second yellow card for a needless tug on the county attacker. County couldn’t make the ten men pay however as Oldham saw out a 1-1 draw to end their campaign ten games unbeaten.

It was jubilation  for the visitors though who celebrated survival on the final day in great style. Both theses teams will meet again in league 1 next year.
