Wolves, Fulham and Aston Villa alerted after Barnsley midfielder turns down new deal

Aston Villa, Brentford, Fulham and Wolves have all been alerted to the availability of Barnsley’s Josh Scowen after he turned down a new deal with the club according to a report from The Sun.

Scowen was a key part of the Barnsley team that surprised everyone this year by challenging for a place in the Sky Bet Championship play-offs though they would eventually tail off and finish in 14th place. However like quite a few of Barnsley’s players, Scowen is out of contract this summer and the club have been doing their best to get him tied down to a new deal.

But Scowen has turned down the contract offers from Barnsley, saying he wants to move to a club that has a more definite chance of challenging for promotion next season. And with him being so good in that Tykes midfield this year, several of Barnsley’s Championship rivals are set to make approaches to sign him.

The four teams reported to be interested in signing Scowen are Aston Villa, Brentford, Fulham and Wolves. Villa have already got form for signing players off Barnsley after snapping up James Bree and Conor Hourihane in the January transfer window and they’ll be able to reform that Tykes central midfield should they get Scowen.

However the other three teams will be looking to snap up Scowen as well. All of them want to challenge for a spot in the play-offs at least but out of the three only Fulham achieved that this season, meaning they will need to strengthen if they want to be involved in that battle next season. And Scowen providing a lot more quality in the midfield, he could be the ideal signing for any of them.
