Derby County lead race to sign Newcastle United defender with Aston Villa and Wolves also in the hunt

Derby County are leading the race to sign Newcastle United’s Grant Hanley though Aston Villa, Cardiff City and Wolves are still interested in him according to a report from the Newcastle Chronicle.

Hanley only joined Newcastle last season and while it was hoped he would become a key player for the club, he was soon dropped after a slow start to the season and found himself unable to break back into the first time. With Newcastle having a rock solid pairing in defence of Ciaran Clark and Jamaal Lascelles and are looking to add another defender following their promotion, Hanley seems to not be wanted anymore and is on his way out of St James Park.

And this led to several teams being interested in Hanley but while the likes of Aston Villa, Cardiff City and Wolves are in the race Hanley, the team ahead of the rest of the pack of Derby. They have already made approaches to Newcastle about the former Blackburn Rovers defender offering £4m for him.

But the fact Derby are only offering £4m may offer the other interested teams a path to signing Hanley for themselves. With Newcastle paying £5.5m for him last year and head coach Rafa Benitez being told he can use any money he brings in by selling on new players, they are looking to hold out to get all of that money back. With the Rams looking to sign him for £4m, one of their rivals may be able to beat them to the signing of Hanley should they offer the £5.5m Newcastle are looking for.
