Sky Bet League One outfit Southend United have today confirmed the names on the retained list for the upcoming season. A total of six players have been told by Phil Brown that they won’t be offered contract extensions at Roots Hall.

In addition to this, Southend will be keeping a further five players on after options were taken to extend their respective deals. Also, Brown have issued extensions to four more in the hope that they’ll remain with the club. However one unlucky squad player has been informed that he is on the transfer list.

There are no significant shocks among the names told that they can leave the football club. Those are mostly types who haven’t been classed as regular starters over the past season, so are free to exit in search of more regular football. David Mooney headlines those, in addition to fellow forwards Zavon Hines and Frank Nouble. Defender Luke O’Neill also leaves the club, along with Jason Williams and Jordan Williams.

Brown was keen to keep certain players at the club, most notably Ryan Leonard, and an option was taken to keep him on the books. Anthony Wordsworth scored quite a few goals over the past season and is certainly an important player. He too has signed on for another year. Central midfielder Michael Timlin is another, alongside Nico Cotton and Dan Matsuzaka.

Three regular starters have been offered new contracts for them to ponder over for the next few weeks. Anton Ferdinand, Adam Thompson and Will Atkinson are names that Southend fans will be hoping to see on the teamsheet next season. Finally, cover defender John White is still in Brown’s plans. Midfielder Jack Bridge has been made available for transfer. Discussions continue with other squad players as well.
