The Championship Relegation Dogfight

18th – Birmingham City

badgeIf Birmingham City are to get relegated this season, their abysmal home record will be responsible. The Midlanders have only won twice on home soil in the league all season, and they are without a win at St Andrews since 1st October, which is over half a year ago! The victories both came in emphatic fashion, as they hammered Sheffield Wednesday 4-1 and Millwall 4-0, which is absolutely bizarre. Despite their blues at home, City have racked up nine victories on the road; only Reading, Derby, Leicester and Burnley have won more away games than 18th placed Birmingham.

Their recent form doesn’t contradict this pattern either, away victories at Doncaster and Millwall and home defeats at the hands of Bournemouth and Reading further emphasised the contrast that Blues fans can’t get their heads round. However, away defeats at Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough means that Lee Clark’s men are still in the relegation dogfight, but with 43 points, three more than Millwall who lead the bottom three and a game in hand on everyone around them excluding Chartlon, few would expect Birmingham City to be playing League One football in 2014 and 2015.
