The Championship Relegation Dogfight

21st – Charlton Athletic

566px-Charlton_Athletic.svgNew Italian manager Jose Riga has adapted well to life in South London, and he has steered the Addicks from the foot of the table to a position where their heads are just above water, although he has had games in hand on the teams above him since his arrival. Charlton have won four of their last nine Championship outings, and if they manage to keep up this form, they should secure survival with flying colours. Bournemouth (1-0), Forest (1-0) , Leeds (1-0) and Yeovil (3-2) have been defeated by the London side in Riga’s reign.

Charlton had the chance to really pull away from danger on Tuesday night, but they succumbed to defeat at home to fellow strugglers Barnsley. This disappointing result leaves Riga’s troops just one point above London rivals Millwall, but crucially, the men from the Valley have a slightly better goal difference and a game in hand. Furthermore, and perhaps even more an even more significant factoris that Athletic won’t come up against anyone better than tenth-placed Blackburn for the rest of the season, as their run-in features contests against mainly mid-table sides.
