The Championship Relegation Dogfight

22nd – Millwall

Millwall-fcIan Hollway’s Millwall remain in the bottom three by a single point, despite a recent run of four games unbeaten, which has seen the Londoners pick up vital away wins at freefalling Nottingham Forest and FA cup semi-finalists Wigan Athletic. The Lions must improve their dismal defensive record if they are going to stand any chance of avoiding a return to the third tier, as they have shipped no fewer than 72 league goals this term, the most in the Championship. Holloway is renowned for producing dynamic, free-scoring teams that tend to leave the back door open at the same time, so improving defences is not one of the Bristolian’s strengths.

The Londoners also have only won once at home since Holloway’s arrival in early January, and have lost against relegation threatened Barnsley and Blackpool in recent weeks. Improving performances at the Den would put Millwall on the right track, and with a six pointer coming up against Doncaster Rovers at home, the men from East London still have a good chance of avoiding the drop, and enjoying a fifth straight season in England’s second level of football.
