Scunthorpe United 2 Bury FC 2

Scunthorpe United returned to the top of League 2, after a entertaining 2-2 draw with play-off chasing Bury. Russ Wilcox, who made it into the record books for his 26 match unbeaten run, made 2 changes from the side victorious at Torqauy, with Hakeeb Adelakun and Terry Hawkridge replacing Michael Collins and Paul Hayes. Bury boss David Flitcroft made one enforced change for the side that won against Exeter, with Tom Soares replacing Fred Veseli who has returned to Ipswich Town.

In an even first half, it was Scunthorpe who had the first chance when Sam Winnall prodded over from 6 yards, but it was to be Bury who had the best chance of the half. Hallam Hope raced through on keeper Sam Slocombe’s goal, only to see his effort smash off the top of the bar, and back into play.

Whatever the managers said at half time seemed to have the desired effect, as both teams began to create clear-cut chances. Danny Nardiello and Winnall wasted opportunities to put their respective sides ahead, but it was Scunthorpe who would take the lead. After a Hawkridge corner was cleared as far as Hakeeb Adelakun, Paddy Madden ghosted in and tapped in his wayward shot. This seemed to rattle Bury, who equalized seven minutes later, in the 69th minute. Eddie Nolan took an age to pick his pass, and was robbed by Danny Mayor, who was hacked down by Nolan for a free kick. From this, Tom Soares guided his header into the left hand corner. Another seven minutes had elapsed, when Mayor hacked down Hawkridge in the box after stunning link up play between him and Nolan. Penalty. Paul Hayes stood up, only to see his effort saved by Brian Jensen, diving to his right, but Hayes maintained his composure to tuck away the rebound.  The Iron looked destined to see out the game for three huge points, but substitute Danny Rose sumptuously curled in to the far corner in the 95th minute to rescue a point for the North East club. A hard earned, deserved point for both teams.
