Championship Weekend Preview

Wigan Athletic v Leeds United

The lunchtime offering sees the current FA Cup holders face off against the 1972 cup winners Leeds United 20 years ago these two sides were poles apart in Football League terms. Wigan were plying their trade in the third division (now League 2), whilst Leeds were consistent Premier League performers finishing 5th in the 1993-94 season. How things have change and today Wigan are battling for a play off spot back to the Premier League and Leeds will have to cope with another season in the second tier. article-2594412-1CBF0B3200000578-55_634x566

Wigan timed their charge with perfection to claim 5th spot in the table as Forest went into meltdown and other play off hopefuls were unable to put a run of results together. However, the job is not finished yet. The Latics have a six point cushion over 7th placed Forest, but have still host 6th placed Reading on Good Friday, before travelling to the fortress that is Turf Moor on Easter Monday. Uwe Rosler has taken to Championship management like a duck to water and used the experience in his squad well to combine eye catching results and hard fought victories. Jordi Gomez has been a consistent performer for Wigan this season and provides a quality creative threat. With 6 goals and as many assists this season he is this game’s key man.

What can I say about Leeds? The calls from fans that “you’re not fit to wear the shirt” are wrongly true. Brian McDermott is not the same man that took the manger’s post almost a year ago. He and the whole of the club needs a lift and with results on the pitch and issues off it cascading at parallel rates you have to fear for the short term future at Leeds. A last minute penalty against Charlton suggested maybe things were turning, but when it rains it pours and captain Ross McCormack saw his penalty, which was heading right for the bottom corner, saved by Charlton keeper Ben Hamer. Leeds are not at risk of relegation, however they need some results to save face this season and build confidence in the stands, in the boardroom and in the dressing room.
