Aston Villa: Remi Garde speaks his mind

In a report on French media site Téléfoot, former Aston Villa manager, Remi Garde, has called the Villa Park job a ‘trap’ following rumours about Steve Bruce’s imminent appointment.

Garde was in charge at Villa for just 147 days during his ill-fated spell as manager. When quizzed about a potential return to Lyon, who he left the year before taking the Villa job, Garde explained that he would consider continuing his coaching but Téléfoot said there’s “no way” that he’d consider becoming “a manager or sporting director.”

Garde elaborated on this saying to Téléfoot: “I left Lyon on very good terms. I think I can say that I have friends there. In the short term it is not an immediate goal of returning to Lyon, but in the medium term I would not be against a return.”

He also said that, under better conditions than he experienced at Villa, he’d not rule out a return to England – commenting specifically that he’d learned somthing from his experience. Speaking about his Villa experience, Garde said that: “Yes it looked like a trap, that I was not able to uncover before accepting. I was too excited, it will serve me a lesson.”

The Frenchman, who appeared for Arsenal in the late nineties, was appointed in early November, 2015. At the time he was succeeding Tim Sherwood, who had been relieved of his duties not long before.

Garde left by mutual consent in March the following calender year, having only won three games in a 23 game period.

The ship was the steadied by caretaker manager Eric Black, who has recently made the headlines for all the wrong reasons of course, before Roberto Di Matteo was appointed in the summer.

The Italian was himself dismissed last week following a 2-0 defeat at Preston North End, which left Villa in 19th position.
