REPORT: Newcastle United 4 Norwich City 3

Newcastle United came from two goals down to beat Norwich City 4-3 in a thrilling match at St James’ Park on Wednesday evening.

Dwight Gayle and Yoan Gouffran were The Magpies’ heroes as Rafa Benitez’s side recovered from a 3-1 deficit in a grandstand finish on Tyneside.

Everything was going to plan for Newcastle United after the first 25 minutes of the match with striker Gayle putting the home side ahead with a close range effort but The Canaries equalised from the penalty spot late in the half when Graham Dorrans netted after Robbie Brady was fouled by Gouffran in the area.

An exciting first half was soon followed by a truly remarkable second half. The home side’s patchy recent form looked sure to continue when Norwich City took a 3-1 lead with two excellent goals from Cameron Jerome and Jacob Murphy and even though Gayle reduced the arrears, Newcastle United looked likely to secure a point at best with less than 20 minutes remaining on the clock.

As the match ticked into second half injury time, Benitez’s side looked beaten while the crowd were feeling anxious until a Gouffran header levelled matters in the fifth minute of stoppage time. The home fans looked set to be leaving St James’ Park content with a point but a minute later the unthinkable comeback was complete when £10 million signing Gayle bagged a dramatic late winner from close range to spark chaotic scenes of celebration in the stands.

The result moves Newcastle United back up to third position in the SkyBet Championship table ahead of Saturday’s trip to Rotherham United.
