Leeds United to battle Championship clubs for midfielder

Leeds United are one of several Championship clubs interested in signing former Aston Villa midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker, according to the Birmingham Mail.

Reo-Coker, 32, left MLS side Montreal Impact at the start of the year and is still a free agent, with several British clubs interested.  Reo-Coker is best known for his time with West Ham and Aston Villa, spending a total of seven years with the two clubs.

After impressing for Wimbledon, Reo-Coker was signed by a West Ham United side looking to return to the Premier League.  Reo-Coker impressed straight away and was made club captain as the London side eventually went up through the play-offs the following season.  West Ham also made the 2006 FA Cup Final.

The following season Reo-Coker lost his place in the team but returned and helped guide West Ham away from the relegation places.  That summer, he signed for Aston Villa for £8.5 million.

Reo-Coker showed his versatility during his 102 appearances for Villa, often being deployed as a right-back or winger when players weren’t available.  The midfielder also captained the team in the absence of regular captain Stiliyan Petrov.

When his contract expired in 2011, Reo-Coker joined Bolton Wanderers but could not prevent the club’s relegation from the Premier League the following season.  The midfielder then joined Ipswich Town but left after only three months.

Reo-Coker then moved to the MLS, playing for Vancouver Whitecaps, Chivas USA and most recently Montreal Impact.

Leeds United haven’t had the best start to the season, and lost at home to Huddersfield Town at the weekend. Reo-Coker has plenty of experience in English football and could provide the spark to finally kick the season off for Leeds.

Bristol City, Sheffield Wednesday and Wolverhampton Wanderers are all also reportedly interested in Reo-Coker, meaning there may be a scrap for his signature.

Scottish sides Celtic and Rangers are interested also, if Reo-Coker wants to make the move in the Scottish Premier League.
