Aston Villa interested in signing former midfielder

Aston Villa are interested in signing former midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker, according to the Birmingham Mail.

Reo-Coker is currently a free agent after leaving MLS side Montreal Impact at the beginning of this year but could return to England with Aston Villa.  The midfielder spent four years with the West Midlands club from 2007 to 2011.

Reo-Coker began his career with Wimbledon and then signed for West Ham United following an impressive run of form with his club.  He quickly became a regular and was named club captain, helping guide West Ham back to the Premier League.  The midfielder was also vital in keeping his team in the league in the 2006-07 season.

Aston Villa signed Reo-Coker for a fee of around £8.5 million and went on to make 102 appearances for the club.  Predominantly a midfielder, Reo-Coker was also deployed at right-back and on the right wing at times when players were unavailable.  The midfielder also captained the side when regular captain Stiliyan Petrov was out injured.

Reo-Coker joined Bolton Wanderers when his Aston Villa contract expired at the end of the 2010-11 season and went on to make 42 appearances for the club.  The midfielder could not prevent Bolton’s relegation in 2012 however and joined Ipswich Town in October of the same year.

After only 12 appearances, Reo-Coker left Ipswich in January 2013 to join Vancouver Whitecaps in the MLS.  The midfielder has also played for Chivas USA and Montreal Impact recently.

If Aston Villa do re-sign Reo-Coker, they will be getting a player who the fans know well.  The midfielder proved that he could compete in the Premier League during his time in England so could prove to be a solid signing in the Championship.
