Wigan chairman hopes for another shock Carrow Road win ahead of Norwich clash

Wigan chairman David Sharpe heralded the strength of his side’s upcoming opponents in Norwich City, however is hoping The Latics can pull off another shock against-the-odds victory at Carrow Road on Tuesday night.

A dismal run of three successive losses sees Wigan Athletic teetering precariously above the Championship relegation places, however at such an early stage, Latics chairman David Sharpe is solely focused on his side’s upcoming fixtures.

Tuesday night sees The Latics face Norwich City for the first time since the Lancashire outfit stunned the promotion-chasing Canaries during a midweek clash in March 2015. A superb strike from attacker Kim Bo-Kyung sealed all three points for a Wigan side whom at that point had only registered a meagre six wins from their opening 34 league fixtures.

Despite the impressive victory, Wigan would ultimately suffer relegation, whilst Norwich would soar to the Premier League via a successful surge to victory in the 2015 playoff final against Middlesbrough. However, after only one season apart, both sides find themselves squaring off yet again in the Championship.

The fixture also holds significance for 25-year-old Wigan chairman David Sharpe, whose first game at the helm of the club came in that shock victory at Carrow Road on March 4 2015.

Speaking to the Wigan Evening Post, Sharpe commented on his side’s chances of stealing a second consecutive win from The Canaries, noting the immense strength of the Norwich City squad that stands in Wigan’s way.

“Norwich have managed to keep their Premier League squad together, the same as the last time they went down, so in effect we’re facing a Premier League team,

“The last time we were down there it was my first match as chairman, we won 1-0, [Bo-Kyung] scored early, and we hung on for dear life.

“I’d certainly take a repeat of that on Tuesday!”

Whilst Norwich remain heavy favourites ahead of the clash, another surprise result could well spark Wigan into life, as Gary Caldwell’s men hope to build on their dominant run to the League One title last campaign.
