2016/17 Sky Bet Championship statistics – 5 games in

We may only be five matches into the Championship season but there is still plenty to gage from the statistics that have been produced. Some of them are nothing specular, such as highest scorers or best away record, but there are some interesting stats overall.

Using our friends at Soccer Stats, we are focusing on some handy facts and figures which one day could come into use for someone! Huddersfield Town top the table five games in, and that is probably the most significant fact of them all.

Highest Scorers

It may surprise a few to see that promoted Barnsley are heading this particularly stat at this moment in time. This is by in large thanks to their impressive home record so far. They have scored 12 goals, one ahead of nearest challengers Nottingham Forest. The Tykes sit third in the Championship table, and a recent 4-0 home win over Rotherham certainly helped their goal tally!

Lowest Scorers

If Barnsley scoring the most surprised you, then Derby County only scoring one goal in five games is an even bigger shock. Considering the talent they have at their disposal, Nigel Pearson will be really disappointed. Jeff Hendrick and Chris Martin have left, but James Wilson and Matej Vydra have recently been signed. They’ll be targeting a big improvement in the coming weeks and months.

Best Away Record

There are three teams with a 100% home record but there is one team to collect more points away from home than anyone else. That accolades falls to Slavisa Jokanovic’s Fulham at this early stage. They are unbeaten full stop, but seven of their 11 points have come on the road. They are already only 15 points away from matching their points tally from away league fixtures last season!

Best Goalscoring First Half Team

Burton Albion are the team to score the most first half goals in the opening five games. Whilst they have also conceded five goals during this time frame, they have netted six in return. Norwich City are the closest challengers on five goals. The team with the worst first half record is Blackburn Rovers, who have scored once and conceded eight.

Best Goalscoring Second Half Team

Once again, it is that team from Oakwell who came up trumps on this category as it is Barnsley who have netted the most second half goals so far. Interestingly, 10 of their 12 goals have come in the second half, suggesting that they are also quite a fit team as well. Paul Heckingbottom will be pleased to know his side have the ability to end games strongly and score plenty of goals.

Most Frequent First Scorers

Another tick in the column of Fulham as they are the only team to have scored the first goal in each of their Championship matches. It is therefore no coincidence that they remain unbeaten at this very early stage as well. Blackburn Rovers, Preston North End, Leeds United and Bristol City have conceded the first goal in four of the five games.

Highest Average Scoring Games

This again probably won’t be a major surprise to most who are familiar with the surroundings of the Championship so far as Nottingham Forest are indeed the team to have been involved in matches with the most goals. An average of 4.40 goals have been netted in matches involving the two-time European Cup victors. 4-3 victories over both Burton Albion and Wigan Athletic certainly contributed greatly to this!

This is probably enough for you to digest at this early stage of the season! There are plenty more, but perhaps nothing too majorly significant at this moment in time. Stay tuned however, as we’ll revisit these sort of facts and figures as the 2016/17 Championship season progresses.
