‘English clubs were scared of taking me on’ says ex Newcastle United midfielder Jonás Gutiérrez

The Argentine newspaper Ole have spoken to ex Newcastle United man, Jonás Gutiérrez, about his current footballing situation and the difficulty of finding a new club after returning to the game following cancer treatment as reported by SportsWitness.

The newspaper asked the player if his time out of the game recovering from Cancer, could’ve possibly scared clubs off and Gutiérrez explained:

“Yes, for some time. Surely that has happened in England, when I left Newcastle, I did not receive anymore offers from that country.

“What happened to me maybe gave some teams in Europe fear, the lack of information. Ok, they are within their rights. For me it (Cancer) was gone and it was a life experience. Now I am in good health and for two years it’s just a memory.”

Gutiérrez spent last season on loan at Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna, however he was only on a one-year deal at the club and it wasn’t renewed at the end of the season. After struggling to settle at a club in Europe following his return to football, he has decided to return to his native Argentina and sign for Defensor.

The 33-year-old is looking forward to playing for Defensor as he sees it as a great opportunity to make up for lost time, which was cruelly taken away from him. The newspaper Ole suggested that if Gutiérrez can perform and impress back in Argentina then there’s no reason why he can’t make a return to Europe; The Argentine didn’t rule it out.
