MK Dons swoop to seal loan deal for Wigan winger

MK Dons have completed the signing of Wigan Athletic winger Ryan Colclough on a season-long loan deal.

Colclough departs the DW Stadium on a temporary basis having failed to make an impact with The Latics upon Wigan’s return to the Championship for the 2016/17 campaign.

With the 21-year-old having fallen out of favour with the Lancashire outfit, Wigan boss Gary Caldwell has given the green light for Colclough to complete a loan switch to newly-relegated League One club MK Dons.

The Dons, under boss Karl Robinson, will have been eager to bolster their attacking arsenal to boost their chances of securing an immediate return to the Championship at the first time of asking.

Colclough began his professional career in 2012 with Crewe Alexandra, making his first team debut on September 22 2012 in a 1-1 draw against Leyton Orient. However, a period in which the Englishman made only 17 total appearances in two seasons cast doubt over the youngster’s career at Gresty Road.

A resurgent 2015-16 campaign saw Colclough surge to prominence, bagging eight goals in 30 appearances prior to a January 2016 switch to promotion-chasing League One rivals Wigan. Colclough secured 10 appearances throughout the remainder of the season as The Latics bagged the League One title, however the winger has seemingly struggled with the transition to the Championship.

Having struggled to find his feet at Championship level, Colclough returns to League One in the hopes of reigniting his career with MK Dons, before potentially returning to prove his ability to Latics boss Gary Caldwell next season.
