Wigan complete season-long loan deal for want-away Cardiff striker

Wigan Athletic have landed the signature of Cardiff City striker Adam Le Fondre on a season-long loan deal.

Le Fondre departs Cardiff City stadium for a second consecutive loan stint, having completed a period on loan with Championship rivals Wolves during the 2015/16 season.

Having failed to make an appearance for The Bluebirds since January 2015, the fractious relationship between Le Fondre and Cardiff  looks set to come to a close. The Englishman is set to see out his Cardiff City contract whilst on loan with newly-promoted Wigan Athletic, with Latics boss Gary Caldwell having been eager to bolster his side’s attacking depth prior to the transfer window slamming shut.

Speaking to Wales Online following Cardiff’s narrow 1-0 loss to Le Fondre’s former club Reading on Saturday, Bluebirds boss Paul Trollope stated the club had considered the possibility of Le Fondre departing the Cardiff City Stadium prior to Wednesday’s deadline,

“Some have moved on and [Le Fondre] , he’s a goal scorer, we’ve looked at the situation carefully, we’re still open for things to happen if that’s the case over the next three or four days before the window shuts.”

Le Fondre began his professional career in 2004 with Stockport County, after which two successive goal-filled spells with then League Two outfits Rochdale and Rotherham elevated the Englishman to the national stage.

A high-profile switch to Reading in August 2011 proved fruitful, with Le Fondre bagging 41 goals in three seasons with The Royals, most notably netting 12 Premier League goals for the Berkshire side during the 2012-13 campaign.

However, a 2014 move to Cardiff has seen Le Fondre’s career stagnate, making only 25 appearances in two seasons with the Bluebirds. Two successive loan spells with Bolton and Wolves haven’t impressed staff enough to award Le Fondre further opportunities with the first team, despite a relatively difficult start to the 16/17 campaign for Paul Trollope’s men.

Now, Le Fondre departs for the DW Stadium, joining Wigan in the hopes of forging a formidable attacking partnership alongside Latics’ star striker Will Grigg.
