Sunderland close in on highly-rated Championship defender

The Sheffield Star understands that Barnsley are set to lose star centre back Alfie Mawson before the transfer window closes. Premier League side Sunderland have bid £3million for the highly-rated 22-year-old defender according to the Daily Mail.

Championship sides Bristol City, managed by ex-Barnsley boss Lee Johnson, Leeds United and Newcastle United have all been linked with the youngster over the course of this summer. Tykes manager Paul Heckingbottom is now beginning to resign himself to life without his key defender.

Bristol City did have a £1million offer turned down a few months ago. Johnson was the man who took Mawson to Oakwell. He played a major part in their promotion and Johnstone’s Paint Trophy success from last season. So far, he has been an ever-present in their preferred starting eleven. The Tykes have won their last two games against Derby County and Queens Park Rangers respectively. Lewin Nyatanga was recently allowed to join Northampton Town on a season-long loan.

Therefore, after only a year, it looks as though Mawson is set for pastures new. This would be a blow to Barnsley, who already have a relatively small squad. Although Heckingbottom may lose a player, he still remains hopeful of completing a deal to sign Chesterfield winger Gboly Ariyibi.
