Napoli plan bid for Villa target

Robeto Di Matteo’s summer recruitment plans have taken a major hit after it emerged that Serie A side Napoli are planning to swoop for Bologna midfielder Amadou Diawara, according to Sky Italy’s Gianluca Di Marzio.

Tutto Sport had earlier claimed that Villa had finalised a £14.5-million deal with Bologna, as well as agreeing personal terms with the 19-year-old but now Napoli have emerged as frontrunners for the teen’s signature.

Daniele Praino is Diawara’s agent and he confirmed that Villa had tabled an offer for the player but refused to be moved on whether the midfielder would complete a switch to the Championship.

He said: “It is true that there is an offer from Aston Villa.

“But the move continues to be in Bologna’s hands – I have no say.”

Diawara had been strongly linked with moves to both Roma and Napoli over the summer but when those talks stalled, Villa stepped into the box seat.

Now, reports in Italy suggest Napoli have re-emerged at the head of the queue with the offer of a permanent transfer and a five-year contract for the player.

Diawara played 35 times for the Greyhounds last term, after a £420,000 move from Lega Pro side San Marino in July 2015.
