One of the most controversial scenarios in English footballing history means that today we have two ‘Dons’ in the football league. After Wimbledon FC went in to administration the club was given permission to move 56 miles north to Milton Keynes despite huge opposition from fans and the F.A. Wimbledon were renamed Milton Keynes Dons in 2004. In 2002 the large majority of Wimbledon supporters who opposed the move and name change set up their own club AFC Wimbledon who started playing in the 9th division of English football. Wimbledon quickly climbed the divisions and became the first club created in the 21st century to reach the football league in 2011. The teams’ first and only fixture came in the FA Cup at the stadium:MK in 2012, there was lots of talk in the build up to the game of a boycott from Wimbledon fans but this never materialised. The game was tied at 1-1 through goals from Gleeson and Midson but a last minute winner from Jon Otsemobor sent MK Dons through. This is definitely the most controversial derby in the football league but hopefully it’s one we will see more often in the coming years.
