Sheffield Wednesday defender close to new contract

Sheffield Wednesday’s Tom Lees is closing in on a new contract at the club according to a report from the Daily Mail.

The 25-year-old defender has become one of their star players over the last two years, being a key part of the defence that have matched the club record for clean sheets two seasons in a row.

But when you put in performances at the level lees was doing, it’s sure to be noticed and several teams were interested in signing him. Burnley, Derby County and Fulham are all interested in signing the defender and a £5m deal was rejected earlier in the summer.

But with the Owls keen to make sure that Lees stays at Hillsborough, they are set to offer him a new contract that will give him £25,000 a week. While it’s a hike in wages for the former Leeds United man, it will make sure that he will stay at Sheffield Wednesday and help them in their bid for promotion.

This new contract will follow up the new deal given to Keiren Westwood. Like Lees, he had received interest this summer with Middlesbrough and Hull City considering making bids for him. But he signed a three year contract earlier in the week to secure his place at Wednesday.
