Will Buckley hopes to prove a point at Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday’s Will Buckley has said to the Sheffield Star that he hopes to make a point there after completing his move from Sunderland.

The 26-year-old winger joined the Owls yesterday as the club finally got their much wanted winger. And they’ve got a man who is determined to do well after what he thought was a miserable season for him. He never made an appearance for his parent club Sunderland he was instead loaned out.

Both of his loan spells were in the Sky bet Championship and they were mixed. In his first loan, Buckley went to Leeds United but he only made one start for the Whites, meaning he quickly returned to the Stadium of Light. His move to Birmingham City went a bit better as he made 10 appearances and scored once, though he will be hoping to improve on that at Hillsborough.

But it isn’t just the lack of first team football which has got Buckley keen to impress in this season long loan deal at Wednesday. He is now entering the last year of his contract at Sunderland and knows it is almost certain that he will be released next summer. So this move is also about trying to get a contract next summer as well as getting more first team football under his belt.

Ahead of the opening game of the season against Aston Villa, Buckley said: “The last few years have been difficult for me and I’ve not played as many games as I would have wanted,”

“This season is about showing what I can do. I’ve come here to play games and with that I think I will get back to my best.”

“I want to show that I can still play at this level and I really think that I can do that here. “It’s a very exciting time for the club and I’m really pleased to be part of it.”

“The Championship is going to be tough this year but I think Wednesday will be right up there.”

“Whenever you reach the last year of your contract you have to be determined to impress and set yourself up for the future,”

“If I do well this season, it should secure me for the future so I need to be performing at my best.”

“That’s what I’m here to do and winning promotion would be an ideal way to do it.”
